Alex McKinnon
Newcastle Knights star Alex McKinnon has come a long way since suffering a debilitating spinal injury in Round 3 of NRL.

McKinnon was left paralysed from the neck down after a tackle from a Melbourne Storm player during the March 24 game, with some fearing he'd never walk again.

This week the 22 year old showed the wired he's improving in leaps and bounds, fronting the media for the first time since the accident. He was actually able to wheel himself into the press conference unassisted.

As part of the RiseForAlex round this week, the NRL will donate $1 for every fan who attends any match this weekend.

While those heading to Hunter Stadium on Sunday when the Knights play the Titans, they will be in for a treat with Jessica Mauboy to perform, along with Taylor Henderson and Jai Waetford.

“As a Rugby League fan I have watched Alex’s recovery process and I am thrilled to get to perform at such an important occasion,” Jessica Mauboy said.

Meantime, Trent Merrin from St George Illawarra holds a special place in his heart for Alex, having spent some time with him in his early years of training with the Dragons.

"We come through grade together … it was a very touchy and emotional period of my life seeing something happen to someone so close," said Merrin. "As soon as it happened .. I wanted to do something [for him] straight away."

Trent celebrated his 100th NRL game this year, and will auction the boots worn - signed and framed - to hopefully raise "some good coin" for Alex.

"It's pretty inspirational. His goal is to walk again, and I know for sure he'll get to it."
