An Australian Special Forces Soldier has died in Afghanistan in a "non-combat" related incident.

The Sydney based digger was found in Kabul at 2pm local time by colleagues near an administration building with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to a medical treatment centre where he underwent treatment but the injury was too severe and he died surrounded by mates.

Australian Defence Force Chief Mark Binskin says his death will impact the nation.

"He was a highly qualified experienced and well respected Special Forces soldier...

I'm not in a position to speculate about the details or the circumstances surrounding the incident."

The Army is providing assistance to the man's family and colleagues who have asked to keep his identity private.
