NSW Police have joined forces with authorities around the country today with the launch of Operation Unification.

The two-week national event is a crackdown on illegal firearms within the community.

It's hoped members of the public will pick up the phone and call to report anyone who may be in possession of a weapon.

Now in its second year, Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith has signed up as the public face of Operation Unification saying there is no place in a peaceful society for illicit firearms.

NSW Police say extra call centre staff have been put on duty over the next fortnight to deal with an expected influx of calls, which they're also assuring members of the public, will be treated confidentially.
