Record numbers of Aussies have taken to the sea, with our nation’s cruise industry now ranking number one in the world for market growth.

Last year 833,348 Australian’s got their sea legs on passenger cruises – more than double the growth rate of any other major cruise market.

“[It’s] grown by an enviable average 20 per cent a year for the last 11 years as a growing number of travellers discover the many joys of cruising,” Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia Chairman Gavin Smith said.

Popular destinations include the South Pacific, inland river cruises around Australia, Asia, and heading across the Tasman to New Zealand.

Australians spent an estimated 8.7 million days at sea in 2013, up 22 per cent on 2012, with holidaymakers enjoying 10.25 days on average on an ocean cruise and 14.4 days on river cruises.

NSW residents are the most likely to hit the high seas, accounting for 41.1% of all Australian cruise passengers.
