COUNCIL RATE HIKES FOR HOME OWNERS Live

by Brett

A number of Sydney councils have been given permission to lift property rates from July 1, including Blacktown, Fairfield, Rockdale and Liverpool.

The rises vary across areas, but most will rise less than $1.50 per week. While the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) said they approved applications to provide additional income to councils in order to "meet their specific needs".

However local governments will need to be transparent, and report to the community just how they're spending the cash each year.

So don't expect your local mayor to suddenly be getting around on a hovercraft bought with the extra cash.

List of Councils affected:
  • Holroyd
  • Randwick
  • Corowa
  • Richmond Valley
  • Blacktown
  • Fairfield
  • Kempsey
  • Rockdale
  • Ku-ring-gai
  • Burwood
  • Liverpool City
  • Liverpool Plains
  • Campbelltown
  • Warringah
  • Canterbury
  • Maitland
  • Wollongong
  • Cessnock
